Personality: Barnaby is the genius rookie ace of HeroTV who has earned the title "King of Heroes" after a year of working alongside his partner, Kotetsu T. Kaburagi-- the veteran Wild Tiger of Sternbild. He's a charming man who cuts a clean figure for the camera, portraying to the audiences within Sternbild the image of a earnest, honest, dedicated hero. This is true for the most part, but underneath the smile is a stern, businesslike and even sarcastic personality. His very rational and practical in all of his decisions to almost a painful degree, and several distinct layers to his personality make themselves clear as we get to know Barnaby over the course of the series, which lasts for approximately 1 1/2 to 2 years in context. These layers, ranging from the superficial charm to the chaotic emotions of a man who never healed from childhood trauma shield the fact that he is a very broken individual at his core. This isn't to say that he isn't strong; on the contrary, Barnaby has a startling integrity and is so dedicated to his beliefs and decisions that it serves as a double edged sword. He will never back down, and is so stubborn that he holds onto his beliefs even if there is no rational reason to do so. For as cold as he tries to make himself appear, he is extremely emotional. It's his biggest flaw, and understandably so. Anyone who has experienced something as traumatic as witnessing their parents being murdered at such a young age would have problems growing up normally.
The drive for justice and vengeance for these murders has been the driving force for much of Barnaby's life. The sole clue he had, a fuzzy memory of the culprit from the night of the murder, has been his only lead and the only light to guide him throughout his formative years. He sacrificed his childhood for this, and grew into a highly judgemental and isolated individual who rarely smiled before he came into the public eye. He is so coldly regimented early on that all of his charms for the camera were precisely calculated, and even to this day he makes decisions based on how everything fits into the whole. He has a very undefined concept of the differences between black and white, and is only just starting to understand that there are gray areas in life. This also applies to his level of trust, which is all or nothing. The slightest indescretion can seem like an act of complete betrayal, although it is thanks to Kotetsu that he is starting to soften in this respect.
One thing that is harder to balance is his unbridled emotions. He's been known to have terrifying flashbacks and panic attacks at the slightest provocation, like watching Kotetsu goof around with a taser. If pushed hard enough in civilian disputes, he can and will forcibly end the conversation by activating his Hundred Power and leaping from the scene in what has been called his 'Handsome Escape.' His rage, once its met, is extremely difficult to allay. On the less violent side, he's also become so overtaken by extreme frustration and despair that he once collapsed in the street, sobbing in Kotetsu's arms.
His already unstable personality was rocked further when he realized that his very memory of the incident that drove his life was faulty. He considered retiring from the Hero business once and for all at that point, and he was questioning everything to such an extent that he came close to blaming his surrogate aunt, Samantha, for the murder. The fact that it was his surrogate father figure, Albert Maverick, who had commited these murders and altered his memory was just a step too far. Murdering Samantha and (seemingly) Kotetsu was unforgivable-- its fortunate that he learned just minutes later that Kotetsu survived the blast.
Ultimately, he has no idea how much of his mind has been altered by Albert Maverick. Nobody will, and he has come to realize that all he only wants two things in life: 1) he wants to be worthy of Kotetsu's trust, and 2) he wants to make his life's decisions completely on his own. Unless he had Kotetsu by his side, he has no desire to be a hero. They are a matched pair. Without his partner, he has no reason to continue.
In context of the Tower, he isn't going to believe any of the story at first. Given his recent history, he'll suspect that this is another way his mind's been altered. Furthermore, he's not likely to notice the major error in his thinking, as he wasn't conscious of the alterations as they were done before. However, he is coming to understand the inconsistencies in life, and is slowly becoming a more balanced individual at the end of the series.
Abilities: Barnaby is a NEXT who's power allows him to be faster, stronger, more agile, and more durable than a normal human by a hundred-fold. It's called the Hundred Power. While active, he's capable of withstanding bullets shot at point blank range, is able to damage concrete with a kick, and is able to leap at least 50 feet in the air-- and that's just the surface of this. Anything that is a natural ability for a human, right down his senses and his healing, is magnified. He can heal his own injuries on a superficial level and his eyesight, which is fairly bad in normal circumstances, is at least normalized. While his powers are active he is illuminated with a bright blue glow, and even his (normally green) eyes glow in this same light.
Unfortunately, this only lasts for 5 minutes. After this point he's unable to use his power for at least an hour, Otherwise, he is limited to the abilities of a normal, if athletic, human. He can get sick. He can die no matter the circumstances.
